Just got another tick but this one is a real hurtin unit. I am pretty sure it is a Sears Elgin but the model/serial number is 401-30800. Th decals are very faint to non exsistant but it appears to be an Elgin. My question is why the number 401-30800 should it not be a 500 series number or is it because I am in Canada and this is more than likely a Canadian model? Pictures to follow of for my anniversary dinner right now… 39 years and counting. If I keep buying motors I may not see 40 LOL. Actually this one is a freebee.
Yeah, Sears/Elgin did that on some models just to drive us crazy. They had a "model" number that did not match the real model number, which would be a 571.xxxxx (made by West Bend)
I have one of these that I picked up plus a parts motor for $10 that we were able to get running in a few hours of work. These are really well build simple motors. I really like mine, and I have the 3.5hp twin to match. These are great to have in the boat as a spare motor while testing motors or going out where rowing back would not be my first choice.
The 401 stamped on the motor is part of the model number, 571 (Sears) -58401 and the next number is the serial number. The complete model number would have been on the tanks front decal.
Here’s the parts and starting instruction for your motor to.
