I am very NEW to this…like I have never worked on an outboard motor…but I am mechanically minded and pretty capable around my home shop ,attentive and a determined student. I have this 1939 Bendix Eclipse TMD. I was told that when it was restored (6-7 years ago) it was READY to run. It has been a show piece up until now. I recently moved to a lake home and I want to get this motor running . I Just received my pull rope today so I thought I would check it out. The COMPRESSION is too much. If I give it a good pull it will turn about half a turn fairly easy and then it is really hard to pull. There no grinding sound in the top or lower end so I do not think anything is binding. It feels like something needs some lubrication. Please HELP. I really want to get this motor running again. Thank you. My phone cell phone number is 423.718.3212. My home number which is the best number to reach me in the evenings is 315.262.2327. Eric
April 16, 2020 at 6:28 pm #200184Well, I would remove the spark plug and rotate the engine by hand to determine if there is something mechanically binding the powerhead. Perhaps the powerhead is just full of storage oil causing it to hydraulic lock….
April 17, 2020 at 4:07 pm #200289I took out the spark plugs as advised ( THANK YOU :)…that helped a lot. Compression is very reasonable with plugs out…fly wheel spins around multiple times with one good NOT strenuous pull. However, when I put the plugs back in the compression is still very STOUT. An outboard person that I am friends with off this sight suggested a couple of short sprays of WD40 into each cylinder through the plug openings. I did that and that helped somewhat…but still very STOUT compression. I still have to give it a really good pull to get the fly wheel to move around just ONE turn. Any suggestions? Eric

April 18, 2020 at 10:24 am #200418Remove the plugs again and verify there is no evidence that they are contacting the pistons. What plugs are in the motor?
