Happy Labor Day weekend everyone! Thinking of purchasing an older qd   Don’t believe it has the universal ignition. In fact, it looks like the coils have melted and run down the powerhead can replacements be found or what are my options if I want to purchase this motor and get it running. Thanks!

Tinman we don’t know what you mean by old.  The first year for the QD was 1949.   I own a ’51 and a ’53.  Both of these old timer run good, a little noisy but they are lighter and they have a little better performance than the average OMC  10 horse.   A little short if you compare them to the Mercury’s but they have a gear shift and a remote tank.  My 1951 has the common era coils.  Earlier QD’s had the push rod points with different coils.  I have a set of those early coils if you decide to make the plunge!

I had a QD-10 once, and it seemed the coil design was inbetween
evolutions of the early “inward facing” coils, with the center rotating magnet,
          and the OMC Universal coils.
Sadly, I can find no photos, but I was able to use Universal coils to get it going
          again.

          Prepare to be boarded!

If you do a Google search for QD 10 coils AOMCI or similar search words you’ll see a few articles on retro-fitting the universal style coil to those earlier laminates.

Dale, thanks. I think this is a 51. I have a 53 I tuned up over 3 years ago and have never tried to start it. But now that I have access to a lake close by I have a lot of motors to run. My buddy offered me this 51 for 40 bucks.

The BRP catalog that links to Marine Engine lists the same coils for 1949-1963 10 HPs. Look it up at this link by scrolling down to 10 HP on the chart, then click on the part number: https://www.marineengine.com/parts/brp/johnson-evinrude-outboard/ignition-coil.html

They made a mistake on that chart. It should say 1951-1963 for the 10 HP. 1949 and 1950 were different. Here’s another interesting article on the subject.
