Looking for someone with experience with tilt trim exchange compatability between engines. I have a great running 1975 Evinrude 115 hp engine (115590) that does not have a power trim/tilt installed. There is a 1978 Johnson 115 hp engine (ML78C) engine available in my area (Puget Sound) on C/L with a working tilt/trim. None of the part numbers match. I’m inclined to pass unless someone here tells me they have done such a switch and it works. I have hopes that tho the numbers are different in reality from the tilt tube down everything will hopefully just replace with no conflicts.
Anyone out there done this before?
May 8, 2018 at 2:34 pm #75553Sorry, but the midsections are completely different between the 1975 and 1978 V4 models….You won’t be able to interchange any of those PTT parts…
Your older V4 used a unit that was mounted externally to the transom brackets, the 1978 models had a newly designed unit that was neatly housed in between the transom brackets…
Trying to find a good working PTT unit for your engine will be hard, especially in salt water areas…Best to look in inland fresh water areas, perhaps someone will have a blown engine with a decent PTT unit. These things are hard to find, so don’t expect to find any "bargains"….May 8, 2018 at 2:51 pm #75556As you search, there are also aftermarket units out there, but some only have enough hydraulic force to tilt but not trim under load. A friend of mine bought one of these when he bought his 85 HP Evinrude new in the early 1970s, and was disappointed when he discovered it could not be used to trim, but it was good for tilting when putting the boat on and off the trailer.
DaveMay 8, 2018 at 3:10 pm #75561Thanks for the responses guys. I expected answers similar to yours but as always had hopes for a miracle. I am also looking for a voltage regulator to install on the engine and the ‘78 had one so my fingers were crossed. There is a unit for my specific year on eBay, $500. Like fleetwin suggested, I’m going to just keep looking for a parts engine with the right equipment. Until then I’ll just keep taking my Tylenol!
May 8, 2018 at 4:04 pm #75564$500 is not unreasonable for a fresh water unit with low hours…
Keep looking, something affordable will pop up when you least expect it….
Why is it that you want a voltage regulator? You can used the "regulator kits" from some of the later models, you just have to find some place to mount it…In reality, these are not full "regulators", they just cut out half of the output…So, instead of six amps at WOT, you would only have three amps…May 8, 2018 at 4:12 pm #75566Those externally mounted PTT units were not very good in my opinion. They gave their share of troubles even when not much out of new. Are you sure you really need / want one?
May 8, 2018 at 4:21 pm #75567CDI 193-3408 combination voltage regulator and rectifier. About $75.00
May 8, 2018 at 4:40 pm #75569I feel I need the regulator as I have a modern (read new) depth sounder and really don’t want to pump 16 volts thru it. Now I just turn it off when we start travelling and the output of the alternator starts to climb. There are plenty of NOS units out there for $50 or so, I was just hoping to get a whole parts engine with other ‘expendables’ just in case. I’m not in a hurry as I probably won’t work on the rig until fishing ends this year. Unless something breaks.
