Held on the same way Mercury flywheel nuts were held on back in the day….Special tool "needed" OR you can wrap a very heavy strap around that nut and use a pipe wrench, the wrench does not need to be tight just bite on the strap and not so much on the nut itself..
Not the optimal way but it will work, and your point will be totally corroded, every Scott I have ever worked on that was the issue, clean them well and clean them again…should get you sparkin

classicomctools@gmail.comSeptember 7, 2016 at 8:13 pm #43547Thanks. I will try a strap. I hope you are right about the points. Most of my experience is with OMC/Gale so right away I am thinking coils.
Pulling a flywheel is usually interesting at best.
September 7, 2016 at 8:15 pm #43548The strap is used to protect the latch ears on the nut as they engage the starter mechanism of the recoil. Then use normal puller to pull flywheel…

classicomctools@gmail.comSeptember 7, 2016 at 10:57 pm #43556On my 5.5 hp J2 Oliver, I was able to use a big socket
(1-1/8" or 1-1/4") on the flywheel nut, that worked great.
Not sure if the 16 hp is the same size nut though.Prepare to be boarded!

I was successful with an old v-belt to pad the nut and a pipe wrench. Somewhere my tool-and-die-maker father is shaking his head.I will try a large socket next time. Hopefully there won’t be a next time.
Now the bad news. There is always bad news. Both coils are cracked. 🙁Thanks for the tips.
I am trying to make the font bigger. Fingers crossed and hit send.
September 8, 2016 at 9:26 am #43606Check with club member Jim Judkins for coils, and I would change the condensers while your at it. Does that one have Bendix coils? I bought a 1956 15 and a 1958 16 Oliver at Tomahawk this year myself. I’m looking fwd. to getting them running this winter. If you need other parts, contact Dan Solderstrom at oliveroutboardfixation.com Dan is a super guy and has lots of NOS parts available.
