I was working on my Super Fastwin today and pulled the flywheel to check things over. The coils and points had been replaced prior to me getting it and I was just going to clean and set the points with Frank’s timing fixture. I noticed a lot of slop in the magplate so I removed it to swap everything to a better fitting plate that I have.
I took a pic of the worn area. Actually there are two bad spots opposite each other. I was wondering what caused this. Run loose or lack of lube or something else.
Just curious.
Also found that whoever changed the coils just jammed them into the old wires. New wires going in tomorrow.

Some guys put the support ring in upside down, which allows the plate to wobble (easy to check now that plate is off)
Some just wear with a lot of use I would imagine. I have had to change quite a few that were worn right through.

The support ring was in correctly and the crank is tight. As this is a power head of unknown provenance it is possible parts and pieces have been changed before.
I am good to go with my spare parts.
November 19, 2016 at 5:36 pm #47671Since the motors were usually ran at full speed or trolling speed and hardly ever anywhere in between, I’ve found the plate bushing and its matching surface on the motor tend to wear egg shaped. A sloppy fit at idle or full speed but a nicer fit in the midrange.
The aluminum can be expanded by lightly using a center punch evenly around the bearing boss to remove the slop or else a set of Atom modules can be used to replace the points and condensors to get the timing accurate again. Watch the classifieds here as I have some extra NOS Red Atoms and will be selling them soon. ☺
November 19, 2016 at 7:51 pm #47674Well, that sure is a lot of wear in a small isolated area….How about the aluminum boss on the block, is that worn also? I would try to find another mag plate, I’m thinking there are plenty out there.
