Is there a way to search using an OMC part number and have it tell you
what all years / models used that part number?
For instance, On my 1960 Evinrude 5.5 Fisherman 5520,
the skeg / gear case cap has no drain / fill hole,
I presume from someone welding up a crack.
The diagrams don’t list this part alone, but rather as a complete
unit with the mating part of the lower unit.
It gives part number 376775 for the two castings.
It would be easier to find the part I need if I knew what all years,
horse powers and models of Evinrudes were donors. If you’re coming to Tomahawk and have said needed part,
and want to sell it cheap, I’d be interested.
Also looking for a high or low speed carb adjust knob and
the square choke knob grommet. Thanks for your wisdom and help!

July 14, 2016 at 12:11 am #40143It would make life too easy if there was a way to find out what fits what going by the part number. At least I’ve never found any such place but I do know a skeg from any ’54 to ’79 5, 5.5, 6 or 7.5 horse motor will bolt right onto your ’60 Fisherman! ☺
July 14, 2016 at 12:20 am #40145If you get a Parts Reference Guide, that helps.
I know they say that you should swap the whole gearcase out, as they are casted together. I have successfully swapped just the skeg piece a few times. I have also had it not work though, where the castings just didn’t line up well enough to make things work. Just something to be aware of.

Chris, I would think that just welding the skeg could
throw it out of whack with the upper casting.
Are you saying mis-matched parts may not mate flat
to each other, or the bolts may not line up?
Thanks.Prepare to be boarded!
July 14, 2016 at 1:49 am #40155The upper gearcase and skeg are bolted together, then they are bored for the bearings and stuff that goes inside. So in theory, mismatching them means the hole will be out of round because there are no two alike. Yeah, yeah, I know lots of guys have mis-matched them anyway, and gotten away with it. Just goes to show how those old OMC motors work no matter how badly you abuse them.
What irks me is the people that part out motors and sell the skeg separately on e-bay.
July 14, 2016 at 2:17 am #40159I am working on a website to do just what you’re asking about. The ‘what used when’ guides are a start, but only as good as the years they cover. The website will be free and supported by donations. I will probably get it up this fall once the busy season has slowed downed. It’s a massive undertaking to say the least.
July 14, 2016 at 1:03 pm #40174Frank, I didn’t think about they halves being line-bored. Makes sense now.
Johnyrude, sounds like a big undertaking, but a great tool for us!Prepare to be boarded!
July 14, 2016 at 5:53 pm #40194Try boats.net If entering the part number doesn’t do it, go through the whole process – make, year, model, engine section.
