The Fleetwin I’m working on would original had a starter
rope anchor / hook as shown on the diagram.
Before I got it, the original rope / hook had been
replaced with a standard nylon rope, threaded
thru a washer and knotted, to replace the hook
      function.
I noticed that the starter rachet (that’s bolted to the
flywheel) had been rubbing on the rope knot,
which would have eventually resulted in rowing home.
Anyone have a clever idea of making some type
of hook, using a standard nylon rope, to
      gain the needed clearance?
      Thanks!

seems I saw someone make these with a spark plug boot spring clip….knot the cord in and bend the spike

        have you tried searches… ?

Thanks Crosbyman. There’s food for thought in your link.
I’m curious about the "pin" mentioned. Don’t think I have
a rewind laying around new enough to have on to look at.
I’m not sure I understand how the pin functions.
I may try to fashion a hook / anchor out of something.
          Thanks!

Whatever method you use, be sure you never pull the rope all the way to the end. If you do, it is just about guaranteed that you will yenk the end off or cut the knot off. Recoil rope sheaves that are made for nylon rope have a pin that the rope goes behind to relieve stress/cutting of the knot. Whenever I put a nylon rope in one of the old ones, I drill the sheave and install a roll pin. Now if I could just find my picture of it.

This is what I have always done.

A heated cheap pare of pliers ground smooth can be used to squeeze the knot for more clearance. . . 🙂

Thanks guys, all makes sense now.
May try to fashion a hook and install a roll pin!

This couldn’t have come up at a better time. I have two of these to convert to new rope due to the cloth cover failing on the original rope. Thanks!
