I have been working on a 1957 Johnson QD18 10hp. I rebuilt the powerhead. As I tried to replace the armature plate that the coils are installed on, I found that it won’t fit easily over the end of the crankcase. I think I can get it to fit on the top of my powerhead but once on it certainly will not move or advance as the throttle is opened. I know that the plate should move freely.
This is my first time working on an outboard, first time rebuilding a powerhead. I think that there must be an issue with how I re-assembled the crankcase, and the two halves are not mated as they should be. Can anyone think of another reason the coil plate doesn’t fit easily

Unfortunately, many of the parts manuals that I’ve seen mistakenly show the retaining ring upside down.

Indeed they do. I made a random search through a number of my OMC parts manuals and probably half of the diagrams show the ring upside down.
