I have a 1955 Johnson 10 HP that has some scratches from use, but looks decent. I’ve been debating on whether or not to restore the paint or leave it original. I have put on a new speed indicator and handle grip since pictures were taken. I know new paint would make it look better but should it remain original. Opinions?

I like a perfectly restored motor. I’ve done many of them…

        That said…

I wouldn’t do anything to this. Nothing. Blotto. Zip. Zilch. Nada.

        Hope that helps.

I wouldn’t do a thing! There are plenty out there that need it – this one does NOT.

It’s a near perfect example of a well cared for, running motor. Those are much rarer than a well restored running motor. Leave it.

Yeah I agree, I like to restore the beaters. that is a pretty nice original. I would leave it be. Just my 2 cents.

My best friend and next door neighbor that I have known since childhood retired after almost 50 years as an auto body man. He offered to repaint it for free. It is a tempting offer, but I think after your input I’ll leave it alone. Maybe put on a shiny brass prop. Thanks, Ted

If you paint it you will be afraid to use it.

No way would I restore that one. It’s nearly perfect original. I have two QD-16s that I consider nice originals. I would gladly trade you either of them for that one if you want one to restore. 😎
