Our local maritime museum was given a Mercury Mark 55 Thunderbolt 1955 SN 971852 four cylinder with 2 lever remote control and manual. Since nothing moved on it, we separated it into the powerhead, drive shaft and lower unit to learn the seized section is the lower unit. Our museum has been hard hit economically by Covid so we want to optimize the sales of this engine. What do you experts suggest for getting the best return? Break down the powerhead further to sell magneto, carburetors, etc separately? List cowling parts separately? The entire outboard weighs 110 pounds, according to the specs, so tough to sell all together? It doesn’t have a connection to our local waters, so not a candidate for display here. Also, the manual describes the disassembly of the lower unit as needing specialized tools, so further repairs of it don’t seem likely for us. Please advise how to get the most value for the museum from this donation.

With respect, you are not going to get rich by either parting it out or selling it whole.
Parting it out takes time and is some cases, as you already know, special tools.
In this condition it “might” bring $100 at a meet, or less, and more than likely less, unless you find that one person.

You are free to post a for sale ad here on our website. Location of the motor and pictures will help immensely.

        Regards

        Richard
