My wife’s bestie’s dad passed awhile ago. She’s going through the garage and came across this.

I have zero idea what year/make it is. I asked them to inspect for numbers, model tag, etc. They say they aren’t finding anything.

I can clearly see a hint of writing on one of the pics, but I’m not there to fully inspect.

      Does anyone recognize this motor?

The only reason I have any interest at all is the color might be close to the Johnson that was some sort of a special duck hunting motor that is sought after?

      Any help is really appreciated.

      Thanks,

Yes that’s a Chrysler built motor.  The ID plate on those is inside the cowling….in one of the four corners.  Maybe on the front port side or maybe on the back port or starboard side.  INSIDE the cowling and usually totally  encased with dirt and grime.

Nice running motors.  The pic shows the ID plate on my Chrysler built SeaKing 9.6.  The textured cowling in your pics looks exactly like mine.

I think it’s 9.6hp Chrysler-built (but not Chrysler-branded) outboard from the early 1970s or so.  This motor could be a Viking or a Sea King.  There are lots of videos of these motors on Youtube.  It probably requires 24/1, but best to double check.

              Any ideas on possible year(s)?

              Probably fuel pump?

              Maintenance difficulty?

              Parts?

              Thx!

Chrysler bought West Bend  in 1965 and continued  into the mid-80’s .  The small ones like yours mimic the old Elgin/West Bend designs….from which they were based.  I imagine your motor will turn out to be early 70’s.  Mine is a 1972.

They use a fuel pump and can run off of any standard marine fuel tank.  50:1 as they have bearings.  Simple ultra-reliable magnetos and usually Tillotson carburetors.  Lightweight and powerful.  Parts are plentiful  with just a bit of searching. Very easy to work on.

                  Yep! Sea King 9.6hp. Vwb27209 = 1972!

Has spark, has compression. Don’t know how much, haven’t measured yet. Runs briefly when I add fuel to carb.

Can’t seem to get the tilt release to work. In neutral, lever full depressed. No dice.

Any ideas? I really don’t want to have to tear this whole thing apart to get the tilt lock to release. It appears that the reverse lock is working which yes I know is the tilt lock but when I use the tilt lock release up by the gooseneck Bolt it doesn’t want to release.

I’ve looked at a parts diagram and for the life of me cannot figure out how that tilt lock is supposed to release. I imagine there’s some sort of a cam on the Tilt release bracket that isn’t getting moved far enough to release the motor. Any ideas would be more than appreciated.

Thanks to all who responded. I think everybody was on the money with the guesses.

The Tilt Lock is kinda hard to release without pulling the motor up just a bit to release the pressure on it.  That is harder to do if the motor is on a wobbly stand or just sitting in the corner of the garage.  Way easier to do on a boat’s firm transom.

This is as far as I can get it without forcing it and this is only able to travel this far because I loosen the transom clamps on my stand so it gives a little bit of play for the transom bracket. If that pivot bolt is supposed to fall down into that lower hole like where yours is I don’t know how it’s supposed to get there?
Am I correct in assuming that bracket you’re showing is a manual hold up device that you engage once the motor tilts?
                      Thx

It’s spring loaded so it engages on it’s own as the motor is tilted up all the way.  You have to reach down there and dis-engage it manually when you want to lower the motor.  Seems like it’s the reverse lock that is not releasing?
