I am trying to find out what AlumaCraft used as a pad and that was under the plywood on the outside of the transom of their aluminum fishing boats. I took off the old plywood and out falls this torn up, worn out piece of material that I have to assume is the pad to limit corrosion to the aluminum. Called AlumaCraft and haven’t heard from them in a week. Built a new plywood piece of marine plywood and have sealed it and have been unable to find what’s the best thing to go under it. The aluminum is in good condition and want to keep it corrosion free. The boat is an 1958 14ft and except for the transom is only slightly old looking as it was always kept inside. Thanks for any help.

I doubt wood will corrode the aluminum as long as you don’t use treated pine, or other chemically altered wood. I’ve removed wood from transoms of a couple of old Crestliners and found no corrosion and no pad. I’m guessing here, but that pad may have been to seal the backside of the wood to keep water from creeping up and rotting the wood. Painting the backside of the wood with a water-resistant marine paint may help too.

Use aluminum screws, because two unlike metals and water can set up galvanic corrosion.

I used cork gasket material when I did my Flying D. I bought two rolls of it at NAPA. That gave good length and width to do it in two halves for the outside transom piece. I don’t remember if I did that on the inside board?

My 1957 FD had a sheet of cork on it so when I replaced the transom wood on the outside I used cork again. I believe I used 1/8″ cork.

It is a cork rubber mat. Used to dampen motor vibration…hardware stores have it but online it’s available. PM me for more info….
