Working on old boat bottom and tried several paint removers… must be great paint because none of these will touch it. What is the best paint remover for really tough enamel paint.
Maybe it would help if you told us what you did try? The WORST is when they use regular latex house paint. I usually use metheylene chloride gel strippers which work good on must solvent based paints. But they’re really slow on latex paint. How about aircraft strippers? They’re pretty powerful.
Otherwise, abrasives or media blasting might be the way to go?
What is the boat made of.wood, fiberglass, or aluminum? And can you tell if it’s anti-fouling bottom paint, or regular paint?
If it’s anti-fouling bottom paint, I’m not sure there is a chemical paint remover for that. Every time I’ve either done it or seen it done, it’s elbow grease and body suits. Not a fun job at all.
I see that as a problem. Any chemical you might use to remove paint will absorb(somewhat) in to the wood, making it difficult for new paint to stick well.
Bob, I agree with RayR,—use a heat gun and work carefully. Today’s strippers are a waste of money.
I heat and scrape in the direction of the wood grain. I did the entire hull of my Chris Craft like that because the previous owner used a 2 part, clear acrylic.
