I’m about to remove the metal impeller on my Evinrude Pal and was wondering if there are any tricks in removing it without damaging the pump parts.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Nope. Just take out the 3 screws. Might need to
take out the gears as the drive shaft gear has
moved out of alignment if it wont go back together.
Also note this pin alignment when putting it
back together.

I was going to remove the impeller unit, then turn the shaft end for end and replace the pump unit.
The reason being, the drive shaft is very corroded at the gearbox end, whereas the end that goes into the crankshaft is in good condition and I thought swapping the pump to the good end would be a good idea and an improvement on the current set up.
It would appear that removing the pump unit from the drive shaft, would best be done by hanging the drive between the vice jaws, with the pump unit sitting on the top the jaws and then driving the shaft out with a hammer……….your thought would be most appreciated!
Thanks again

They sold a lot of these, and as they don’t take
up much room, many are still around. Many
are parts motors. I would buy them mostly,
along with Scouts and Rangers, and build
complete motors. The 1938 I’ve been posting
recently is an example. While gas tanks, gear
cases ,with good gears and the scag still on,
are harder to find, the drive shaft and impeller
assembly were not. I can only remember
having one bad impeller assembly. So- I have
never tried, or had the need, to remove one.
If I was in your situation, and as it is
something I could do, I would mig the bad
end and hand file it to fit the gear. You could
end up with a better fit than when it left the
factory.

July 8, 2023 at 10:36 am #277858Will the drive shaft just pull out of the powerhead on this model. I have one I would like to replace the water tube grommet but the drive shaft and impeller are stopping me at this time.

As many of these I have had, I haven’t saved that many
pictures and I’m away from home just now. You
can unbolt the drive shaft tube from the block and the
drive shaft will come right out.
When putting it back together, spin the prop or flywheel
and it will drop back in,

This is what I do. From a hardware or home improvement
store look for a grommet like these that fits on the water pipe.
Either type will do.
Then put it on a drill bit, where it fits tight, above the twist.
Spin it and using sand paper, or a flat file, take down one side
till it fits. Get a couple in case you go too far.

Not having access to welding, I decided to “take the bull by the horns” and try hammering the shaft out. First of all, I applied some WD 40 and after two hits it started to move and it came out on the third hit. Interesting to note that on removal, it showed 4 longitudinal cold chisel marks where the impeller was positioned. To minimise damage, I put the shaft through a thick washer on the top of the vice jaws before hammering to distribute the load. After I had repositioned the impellers correctly to the other end of the shaft, I put a bead of JB Weld round the base of each impeller to lock them in position (as show in the photos), making it easier to remove in the future if required.
Hope this helps others and thanks again for your help.

I’ve never had one apart.
I thought they were pinned.
Shows how much I know.
They really work well. When
you pull one over there is
water coming out of pipe
on the exhaust manifold
even when they don’t start.
Thanks for the pictures.
