Hi everyone.
Could anyone please help me out with the above, or any information regarding the servicing of the above motor.
My neighbour has one ………it has been lying covered up in his basement and hasn’t run for nearly 50yrs. !!!!
He got it out the other day and believe it or not, it started on the third pull and ran very well !!!
He is very keen to give it a thorough going over as we hope to display it together with other old outboards at the boat show here in Auckland in May.
Fortunately it has not been in salt water so appears to be in mint condition.
It looks like a long shaft motor. It weighs 40lbs and has BNL stamped on the flywheel under the serial no.19297.
I have heard that the water pump can stick on these motors, resulting in the motor over heating………any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much in advance for any information.
Kind regards
MonteNZ
PS We have never seen another one of these in here in NZ.February 25, 2016 at 12:36 am #32481Anonymous
The water pump parts that usually cause trouble are the check valves. There are two of them, and if they stick in the open position, water won’t flow up to the powerhead. Fortunately, they are easy to access, just unscrew the hex caps on the water pump. Keeping them free and loose is usually as easy as removing them, cleaning out the chambers with a soft nylon bristle or brass brush, making sure the seats are clean, then putting the check valves back in and replacing the caps.
email me at outboardguy44@gmail.com and I can help you out with a scan from one of my old factory booklets
By the way – if its a BNL, that makes it a long-shaft brass motor. The BN had brass lower unit, prop, and other castings on the exterior of the driveshaft tube. The "L" does indicate long shaft. I’ve seen lots of BN’s, but never a BNL. Have fun with it eh™

PS It certainly is a BNL motor and everything below the motor itself is all brass as you described…….interesting,in that it would appear they aren’t very common. -
