A donation to the antique boat Musseum in Clayton, NY would be my suggestion. Get some club members to give you a value for it, take the tax write off and feel good that it’ll be seen, studied and enjoyed for what it is.
October 14, 2016 at 5:43 pm #45842The current market value would best be found by an auction where the last and highest bid
sets the exchange value if that is your desire. I doubt if there is anyone who could say what
that might be with any degree of certainty. An auction is a chancy affair. My folks had an
auction the weekend the stock market collapsed back in the 1980s.The Dow Jones was at
about 2,000 so a 500 point drop got everyone’s attention. The auctioneer almost
had to give away things that should have brought a good price. The following Monday
the stock market recovered strongly and today stand above 18,000 although a lot of that
is merely inflation. A private sale at a negotiated price may yield a smaller gross number but a better net number than a public auction with some degree of certainty. A lot of ifs
and and maybes to fret over but at least your cost basis is low so any value received will
be a plus…we should all be so fortunate.
LouisApril 14, 2017 at 8:22 pm #56091Hello all,
I apologize for the long delay in posting to this thread. It has been a bit of work, but the estate has finally been settled to a point where this Salisbury motor can be sold. In consultation with the rest of the family, it has been decided to offer it at auction on ebay sometime in early to mid May. It will be sold as-is, it has not been touched since the original posting of photos here.
It will be sold as a "pickup only" item from here in Walden NY, since I don’t want to carry the liability of shipment, but I will have a local UPS type shipping service for any potential buyers to work with directly and discuss prices with them if shipping is needed. I plan to make the motor available for inspection with an appointment soon, and continue that up until the day it is sold. I hope to get this all together and announce the day the auction will start very shortly.
I appreciate all the interest by message, email and phone that this motor has generated. I think it is best to give everybody a chance to own this motor or buy it and donate it to some museum, whatever is their desire. We the family would not benefit financially from a donation, and need to sell it to satisfy estate requirements.
There will be a minimum bid amount, which will be based on the highest of the (unsolicited) offers I have received to date. There will be no hidden reserve. It will be necessary to be a registered ebay user, and be prepared to pay either by paypal, cash, certified or bank check. Let me know if there is anything I can answer in the mean time.
Have a Happy Easter or Passover weekend,
Jim
April 14, 2017 at 9:32 pm #56092Just out of curiosity, Jim, where was the estate located that the motor came from? The reason I ask is that I have some familiarity with the area around Walden – my inlaws have a dairy farm near Accord.
April 14, 2017 at 10:04 pm #56097The motor was in a home near the Hudson River closer to Albany NY.
