I picked this old Goodyear Seabee up out of the back of an antique shop last weekend; it turned over and had compression. In the last couple of days with help of folks on the board I got the magneto to fire, now on to the next issue. It looks like someone patched, sealed or repaired the foot with what appears to be JB Weld or something similar. When I got the motor the prop nut was finger tight and the shear pin is missing; I’m wondering if that’s somehow connected to this patch job or whatever it is. Is there a panel or something behind where this substance has been applied? Whatever the reason it was applied to both sides of the foot. I’d like to open this area up and look at the water pump but this repair job makes me want to proceed with caution. Any Ideas? How hard would it be to get a shear pin for this motor? It’s a 1950 Goodyear Seabee (Gale) 025-3564 two cylinder 5 hp.
Thanks!
RaySeptember 23, 2016 at 1:18 am #44567without seeing it it is covering where gaskets go . water pump area. shear pin can be made. no problem.
September 23, 2016 at 1:21 am #44568Let me know the length and diameter of the pin and if I have one I’ll mail it to you, or 2.
You will also need a cotter pin for the prop nut. May have them also.I have used JB Weld successfully on OBM repairs. Maybe you can use John Deere Corn-head grease
in the gearbox. It is very resistant to water washout. Probably won’t be running the motor much,
anyway, will you?The pin is the minor part of the problem. I’m a Merc man so I hope others will advise you.

September 23, 2016 at 5:24 am #44579Looks to me as if there is some reinforcing fabric or tape in that adhesive. Properly done epoxy repairs often seem to work. Is there a pump rotor behind the prop? Is there a removable cover that is bonded into place? I wouldn’t give up on the motor at this point……
September 23, 2016 at 10:25 am #44583Betty Ann thanks for replying. I’m assuming a generic pin could be found, or, like you said one could be made. Certainly a possibility someone didn’t have a gasket available and improvised.
JW thanks, unfortunately I don’t have a pin to get the dimensions from, Like you said, I don’t think the pin will be a major concern.
AMuller I’m hoping there is a panel behind that and not that one was not there and someone formed a replacement.
I’m going to try & pull the gear hosing cover today and maybe I can get enough of an inside look to see what’s going on.
Thanks!

Brandon FLSeptember 23, 2016 at 11:40 am #44586Ray, were you able to download those manuals and parts diagram? Should give you an idea what is there and if there is anything missing.

September 23, 2016 at 11:46 am #44587JB is covering part which holds impeller. Probably just there because of leaking gasket. Remove part inside prop and all will be revealed.
September 23, 2016 at 11:55 am #44589Cajuncook1 yes I did Thanks for those links! In this particular part of the cutaway diagram this panel is obscured to show what’s inside. It does look like there should be a panel there & a gasket. I’m willing to bet this was done to seal the panel because the gasket was failing.
Melugin thanks that is going to be my next step. There are two screws holding the gear housing cover on, one is stuck. I saturated it with PB Blaster and will try again later.
September 23, 2016 at 1:28 pm #44593"JW thanks, unfortunately I don’t have a pin to get the dimensions" – just measure the diameter of the pin hole in the prop shaft and the length of the "slot" in the prop. I can go from there.
September 23, 2016 at 2:06 pm #44594I have used JB Weld on many things but mostly to fill dents in the gearcase on the outside. You can make a good gasket too. Your local hardware store sells brass rods all different sizes too. Just cut to fit
J.W. Good to hear from you!!
