Can anyone provide any feedback on paint purchased from Peter/NYMarine?
So far I am striking out with Scott at vintage outboard paint. He’s suggesting he mixes his own paint but I’ve had communication with at least two people who say they don’t believe that is true. And quite honestly he sent me replacement paint for the five cans of seahorse green that was the wrong color and the replacement cans were also the wrong color. So my guess is it’s out of his control he’s just sending me what he gets from his supplier. And I now know who that is. So I’m thinking very seriously about possibly going to the business who purchased Peter’s paint business to see how they do. But I’d like to get some feedback from the group first. I guess there’s two questions to ask:
1. Were you satisfied with the paint color being close enough to the original?
2. If you purchased the same color of paint more than once did the paint match itself when you received it or was the color off?
Thank you all in advance for your feedback.
Fyi – I did contact the individual who has the old Nason paint codes and he sent me the code for the Johnson seahorse green. I just need to get to a Nason distributor who can mix the paint to see how it looks. In the meantime my local automotive paint store handed me a color book where I was able to pick a color that is a near perfect match for Johnson seahorse green. I bought a can of it already and it looks great. So no matter what vintage outboard paint goes away from me as far as I’m concerned. I don’t understand why people have to hide things and FIB about their business practices. I suppose it’s his choice of how he runs his business but it’s my choice whether I spend my hard-earned money on crap. Now I need to get a refund out of him. Thanks again all!

It’s not a perfect match it might be a tiny shade greener but it looks very good as far as I’m concerned. Much better than what I was dealing with. I will post the recipe and the label in a second post.
The picture is my air silencer painted from my qd15 up against my CD 12 that was painted with what I believe to be the proper seahorse green before vintage outboard somehow got mixed up.

57 Johnson RDE-19July 26, 2025 at 12:33 am #298529John – seems you found a good match for the Seahorse Green, but to answer your original post on NY Marine paint I’d offer the following. I always used his aerosol spray paint:
- On the motors I used the NY Marine paint, his paint colors were always a perfect match to the factory original.
- There were a couple times I ordered an extra can or two from him from a separate batch for touch-up work or because I didn’t order quite enough to begin with. In every case, the additional paint was a perfect match to the original shipment
The only issue I had with his aerosol cans was on my ’54 Johnson Seahorse Green when I had 2 cans that leaked badly around the base of the spray nozzle resulting in a big mess of dripping paint running down the can and spilling all over the shop floor and of course a crappy paint job. I had the same problem with 1 can of ’56 Holiday Bronze. In both cases, Peter sent me replacement cans at no cost and they were a perfect match to the original order he had shipped to me.
Assuming the new guys who picked up Peter’s paint line are using the same distributor, it’s a very high quality paint.

July 26, 2025 at 2:04 am #298530Thanks Bob. Much appreciated. May I inquire as to the cost/can of Peter’s paint?
Thx!
