I tried it out today, after checking for leaks or blockages. It runs great but still seems a little hot.Not paint scorching hot or hot enough to make water sizzle.A little hotter on the starboard cylinder than the port.I can keep a finger on it,but it gets uncomfortable pretty soon.I have no other motors without pumps or impellars so nothing to compare it to.It’s a great running motor and I don’t want to screw it up.Advice please?

Was it tested on the boat or in a tank. It will not pump in the test tank

On the boat.Started right up and opened throttle right away to get the water moving through the system. It runs like a scalded cat,but I think it gets to hot.

Is the spark advanced too far? I find that after a point, there is no increase in RPM with more advance, and it seems to run hotter.

One cylinder will always run a bit hotter than the other due to the elevation of the cylinder in relation to the other…height requires more effort for the water to flow. But the question is "Where are you touching the cylinder to determine the temp?" I typically touch the cylinder on the front side about an inch inboard from the head.

George,I’m not touching it where you suggest, but will today. Can you give me an idea of how warm it should be at 3/4 throttle?

The rule of thumb I use to check motors for overheating is to splash a small amount of water on them with my fingers. If it doesn’t spit and boil, I don’t worry about it. There is no spec on running temp because the temp your motor runs at will depend on water temperature.

When it is running you should be able to hold your hand on it without feeling
so hot you have to pull your hand off.
