Hello all,
I was looking through the pictures to an upcoming auction and spotted this. From what I can tell it looks to be an early 50’s 25 hp Johnson. Can anyone help me identify it? Looks to be set up for a steering wheel not a tiller. If the price is right I might pick it up. It also looks like there is another smaller engine next to it but i’m not familiar with them enough to identify it by just the lower unit. Any help would be appreciated.
July 30, 2015 at 4:16 pm #21254You are correct, it is an early 50s Johnson 25hp. Looks like the old girl has been setting there for an awful long time, you would want to have a much closer look before shelling out money for it.
July 30, 2015 at 4:16 pm #21255Yep, that is an early 50’s RD. That looks like a good find Under all that grease, you’ll likely find a real gem. It looks like its been oiled good all its life
I believe the other motor is an old Scott.July 30, 2015 at 6:12 pm #21260Pretty sure it is a 1953. The other motor I cannot identify sorry!

I believe the other motor is an old Scott.I think you are right about the other motor. When you said scott i started researching and it looks a lot like a 1946 Scott-Atwood which would mean it is a 3.6 hp being that is the only thing they made that year. Now that I look at it closely it is a rather unique lower unit. I think that I would rather have that over the big johnson just for ease of transport.
July 30, 2015 at 9:37 pm #21273If you can grab that baby for less then $100 and it turns over I would jump on it. But then…I have been burnt before on these old gems. That one looks like it would clean up really nice tho, decals look nice, prop looks good. I’d take the gamble..again, only if it turns over.
July 30, 2015 at 9:39 pm #21274The RD looks to be missing it’s tiller. Pretty easy to come by if it is good for good. I have a 54 and it is a blast to run. A "little" noisy by todays standards but so what! The Cool factor makes up for it.
July 31, 2015 at 1:44 am #21300the other motor is definitely an older Scott. Too bad you didn’t get the power head in the pic
July 31, 2015 at 3:38 pm #21325Don’t be late on buying that RD! Those are great engines and it looks to be in pretty decent shape under that dust.
They are excellent runners and a lot of fun! If it has original cracked coils that will be even better as there would be no way some idiot had a chance to run it on 50:1 before you buy it. -
