Both Permatex products are highly rated.
51531 and 51813. Preference? Ease to work with?  Issues in working time, not much surface area on the crankcase halves.

I’ve used the Permatex 51531 with no problems.  It won’t start setting up until you put the crankcase halves together, so you have time to apply it carefully.   As fleetwin has noted, this is a critical step.   Read the instructions – you don’t need to apply a huge bead of it.   Keep it away from the crankshaft bearing areas so it doesn’t get squished in there and cause problems.   My other advice – tell the family you can’t be bothered, close the door to the shop to keep visitors away and turn off your cell phone – it’s a process where you don’t want any interruptions.

The 51531 is preferred if the mating surfaces are smooth and in good condition. The heavier 51813 would be better if the surfaces are gouged, or roughed up.

            • Is Permatex Surface Prep necessary
            • Should  the sealant be applied to both halves or just one.

I just clean both crankcase surfaces with acetone to get them ready, then apply the Permatex sealer to just one half.  You really only need the actual Permatex primer product if you plan to run the motor the same day you assemble it.

When I need to adjust ring end gap I put my point file in the vice straight up.   Hold the ring in my hand with pointer finger and thumb.   Squeeze the ring against the file and move the ring up and down on the file.   The material will come of very easily so go slow and check it often.  Sometimes the locating pins might need to be tapped in a little also.

Mike asked me a good question, and I want to make sure I did not give him bad info.  Mike asked if when installing the new rods, does rod orientation matter in these pistons/powerhead.  I replied that rod orientation does not matter on this engine, there is no oiling hole for the wrist pin.  I just advised putting them in the same way they are currently in his engine (numbers up or down).  Making sure the rod cap line up marks are facing in the same direction.   Frank:  please ensure I haven’t given Mike bad info, thanks.  Don

The Good, the bad and the ugly

Received the parts the other day.

Installed the NOS connecting rods, pushing the wrist pins was exciting. The toughest part was unscrewing the connecting rod screws that are 60+ years old NOS tight.
As I was fitting the pistons into the cylinders one of rings snapped. There aren’t any rings available except at MarineEng.com $$$. Have an ad in AOMCI classifieds.

“Dry” fit the crankcase together with generous engine oil lubrication, 2 pistons and 5 out of 6 rings. It hand turns very nicely.

Once I locate a piston ring I just need to reassemble. Everything is clean, I have the Permatex sealant.

OK, was afraid of that.  You have had those rings on and off a few times, which may have weakened them.   I thought you said that Ed had new rings for the engine.  At this point, I would consider replacing all the rings.  Expensive, sure, but we sure don’t want anything to go wrong after you have spent all this time/money on this project.

Ed has the oversize rings, not the original ones.  I’ve placed ad in the classified here and AOMCI online.  Welcome other suggestions.
