I am currently searching for a Cub or Mate to buy, and I am curious as to what price would be good for a complete motor that can best be described as in fixable mechanical condition, and in the sort of cosmetic condition such that the fuel tank does not have any decals and is browned, but the rest of the motor looks ok. In other words, what is a fair price for a reasonable restoration project considering that I am younger and my age tends to get me deals. I found this one and am curious what a fair price would be.

June 12, 2025 at 3:44 pm #297275You never know when you may stumble on one for $50.00 but the asking price for a running Cub is likely going to be $400.00 and up, depending on condition. You can easily add $200.00 to the asking price of a Mate in the same condition. It’s not uncommon for these motors to be so worn out that if they will run at all, it will only be out of the water, or with the prop off. It also common for the coil to be bad, but there is a substitute. The motors still have value as parts. I recently took a chance on a Cub for $175.00. There is a you tube video link in the link below.

June 12, 2025 at 10:45 pm #297289In other images it appears to be in good physical condition with a few light scratches on the cowling. The paint on the lettering is somewhat faded as can be seen in the pictures. The listing says that it turns over, but nothing else apart from a bunch of blabbing about its rarity etc…. the spark plug lead seems to be in good condition, so there is a chance that somebody has redone the ignition in the past or it is just in really good condition. Don’t know anything else about this particular Mate though.
