Like Gary said – The valves are not spring loaded – by holding the bulb with the arrow pointing up lets gravity aid in the sealing.
Like Frank said – Short story: It is up to you, and your situation. From what I have read, the fuel filter is near the motor and the squeeze bulb a few inches below that.
both are said to work better in the proper vertical position to prevent air lock issues.November 9, 2016 at 8:47 pm #47222Thanks everyone for the comments.
Next part of the question, can I use a guality Gates or Goodyear 5/16" automotive fuel hose, or do I need marine grade hose?
If so I am open to suggestions.November 9, 2016 at 8:49 pm #47223Sorry that should be quality Gates…….etc
November 9, 2016 at 9:52 pm #47225The EPA might come knocking if you don’t use one of the new A1 or B1 rated fuel lines but heck, regular fuel line from the auto supply is much cheaper and does the job! I use 12′ lengths, not the expensive stuff designed for injector systems, and it seems OK. If it has been sitting for a while with some fuel in it, I do like to purge the old stuff out before connecting it to the motor as it can pick up some color from the hose. It’s actually a good idea to purge any hose that has been sitting, not just the cheap stuff.
November 9, 2016 at 11:09 pm #47226I recently bought the new latest and greatest EPA compliant fuel line to re-plumb the original motor hoses while servicing my 9.9, at a local OMC dealer. $10 a foot.

Hadn’t read the regs before:
http://www.boatingmag.com/proper-boat-hose-sizing
"A1" (fire resistant) is required between pump and carb, but it sounds like B1 can be used for the tank to engine line.
November 10, 2016 at 11:10 am #47240Another thing to consider about the black Gates hose, is that when it ages the black coating will get on your hands while handling. Avoid buying the pre made hose and primer bulb assemblies at Wal Mart, along with the other aftermarket stuff out there…. all of which is junk. Instead, try checking with a local Mercury dealer to see if they sell fuel line in bulk by the foot. Or you can by a universal [8 ft.] fuel line and bulb from your Mercury dealer in the neighbor hood of $40. This may seem expensive, but I can tell you there is no such thing as an economical ”good” fuel line out there… except for using the black gates stuff. Disclaimer: The black Gates hose does not carry the appropriate Coast Guard rating for use on water craft, which has already been pointed out.
November 11, 2016 at 2:41 am #47265OK based on the suggestions given, I think my final setup will be using one of the pre-made Mercury grey hose / primer bulb setups, spliced into some Gates 5/16" automotive fuel hose (non fuel injector), with an inline clear glass filter near the motor.
Thanks everyone for the help. -
