I have a 1954 5.5 hp Johnson outboard that has about an 1/8th" lateral play of the propeller on the propeller shaft. Should I be concerned about this? If so, should a washer spacer be inserted on the shaft to correct this play? And if so, is metal OK such as S.S. or Aluminum, or should I use a Nylon or Teflon washer? Dale.

I would think with the right size sheer pin in place, the prop should not move that much on the shaft unless the hole in the shaft or prop is really worn. Is the entire prop shaft moving that much in the gearcase?

The prop shaft does not move. Just the propeller. The shear pin does not fit snugly in the shaft hole. It slides fairly easily and is only held in place by the rubber shaft cover at the end. Possibly that’s where some of the play is developing. I’ll try to insert a slightly thicker shear pin to see if that helps. Thanks.

It would seem obvious that the hole is oversize OR the pin is too small. My bet is on the pin. It is supposed to be 3/16" diameter X 7/8" long, stainless steel.
