      Hi,
I am rebuilding a gear case on my 1964 Evinrude 18hp, model 18402. I am about to in stall the bushing at the in the back side of the unit (farthest from propeller) and noticed there might have been a pin that broke off. looking at pictures of some of the older bushings there were two holes in them that look like they would line up to a pin, however, the newer bushings don’t have any holes, just a shallow groove cut into them. Is this channel supposed to be held "in place" with a pin that may have been there at one time? in others words, do I need to drill out the hole, install a new pin and line up the bushing channel to the pin?

      Thanks, Tom

All the ones I have dealt with have had a hole in the bushing. It was not uncommon to see them mis-alligned. If pushed in too far, the easiest trick was to grind the pin off smooth and drill a hole for a new pin right next to the old one. . . 😉
