I’ve got a ’55 Evinrude 25HP. I have been told that I can take a later model carb and ignition system (from, I think, a ’58 or ’59 35HP?) and install them. The benefit is that the later models had a setting at WOT that would allow the engine to run more efficiently and save mileage.
Anyone have info on this and what I might need to do to get it setup and working?
June 30, 2021 at 2:11 pm #241625I think you are speaking of the “Fuel Saver” system that first appeared on the 1956 30hp What it does is after getting up on plane, backing off with the throttle just a bit closes the carb throttle butterfly somewhat. Then, it is running at full spark advance and partially closed carb. Works ok on some boats, not so effective on overloaded rigs where full throttle is needed to keep it up on plane.
June 30, 2021 at 2:50 pm #241626Sounds like it. Is it straight forward to get it installed on a 25HP?

Not sure if the cam roller assembly would mount up on your 55 intake but maybe so. If not, maybe you can swap out the ’56 manifold onto your ’55?

July 1, 2021 at 8:53 pm #241726Definitely helpful. I’ve got the carb and ignition plate from a ’58, but I don’t have the intake plate. Thanks Bob
