Hello, I changed the coils on my 1952 QD13 over the weekend. With the new coils installed it seems the rub on the fly wheel. I did notice on right side the hole is oblong so i made sure the were adjusted in close. Still seems to be rubbing when i spin the flywheel by hand. I installed the Sierra 18-5181 coils. Any ideas what would be causing this? Also with the new coils in i don’t have spark to either plug. I assume because the coil pick up it touching the flywheel it grounds it out.

      Thanks Nick

A "Boathouse Repair" is one that done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

There were Sierra coils made for a time that had miserable fitment. The coils themselves were OK electrically….but the laminates were terrible and would require filing etc to make them usable.

If you can return the coils I would suggest that you do so and purchase genuine OMC coils.

As Tubs states….there is a tool that makes alignment a lot easier but even with that tool; if you have the “bad” batch of Sierra product….you may still have to do some filing.

It should not be that hard to get the coils to line up with the bosses on the mag-plate. With or without the tool. It sounds like your Sierra laminates are the culprit.

Great thank you. Another question i have is the plug wires. Where can i find a new set? Can i use wires from the auto-parts store?

If your local auto parts store sells plug wires with solid core (wire) conductors they work fine. Where I live not many stores have solid wires anymore. Lots of old motor collectors buy a hundred foot roll from the internet stores.

A little grinding on your coils and they should be fine.

If your auto parts store doesn’t have the wire core wire, try a lawn mower shop, tractor supply store, or, ____um___ marine dealer. Cars haven’t used the stuff for many years because it causes radio / TV interference.

bike shops have solid core stranded 7mm wire you need I have used deep discounted carbon fiber wires and extracted the plug boots…to reinstall on solid core wire

your fingernail should not snag the coil laminate edge when installed properly

About a year ago, I found some solid copper spark plug wires at a Tractor Supply Store. The employee I asked said they didn’t have them, but I read the boxes and found a set. They don’t show on their website.

The “bosses” that you can use for coil alignment are the machined surfaces JUST under where the coil “heels” (metal ends) end up. I usually just fiddle around until the coils are level with the machined surfaces. But that won’t work if the coils have bad laminates.

I save the old coil laminates to use on those Sierra coils. If you have no spark, take an ohm meter and see what the resistance is between the terminal on the spark plug boot to ground. It should read several thousand ohms. Also your points when closed should read close to zero ohms.
