Wiring up the electric start on a 1956 Johnson 30HP. This originally used 6V battery but I want to use a 12V battery (without a resister). From a previous thread the 6V starter will be ok but the starter relay and choke solenoid need to be changed. Marineengine.com says I can use Sierra 18-5807 for the starter relay. They have no current number for a choke solenoid. I can look for a used one off a parts motor but is there another alternative?

Also I have start and choke pushbutton switches and would like to add a keyed switch for locking. Does anyone have a suggestion for that switch?

Any comments about adding fuses? My boat is aluminum.
      Thank you.

            You can use a choke solenoid from a ’57, ’58, ’59 35hp to start.

For a key switch, get one for a magneto ignition, with 2 M posts on it. That is the kill circuit if you want to add one. You run leads from the points post to the M terminals.

An alternative, is to simply buy a resistor and wire it in. I have done that as well. I have a few write ups from what I did somewhere on this computer! Illl look for it, and the part numbers of the resistors used.
