I have some questions regarding the Johnson HD 25. In the lower unit I found this unfamiliar (to me) upper seal setup. Thr driveshaft goes through this tube, which sets into the lower unit. The parts diagram shows a spring and a seal below that tube. I’ve looked at 5 parts motors. Some have the seal over the spring. Some have the spring over the seal (as shown in the parts diagram. Spring with no seal. No spring or seal. I guess the spring presses the seal to the drive shaft channel? Are there other models that use this system?
Between the gearfoot and the leg is this gasket that only covers part of the mating surfaces, as far as I can see. I would have guessed that there would be a difference in one of the surfaces to match the "ungasketed" part but both mating surfaces are flat. What’s up with that?
The prop shaft seal from most of the gearcases I looked at is the same. It says "Garlock Part 35." Are these available (I can’t find them) or does anyone know of a cross reference for another seal that will fit?
You’ll have no problem finding that seal as it’s the same one used on the later three horse JW and Lightwin motors. It seems to me the first year edition three horse seals were different though.
