NOW THAT RADIO SHACK HAS GONE UNDER, THEIR BRIDGE RECTIFIERS ARE NLA AND I’M LOOKING FOR A SUBSTITUTE. I HAVE AN OLD MERCURY WHOSE STATOR PUTS OUT ABOUT 9 AMPS AND THE RADIO SHACK RECTIFIER IS RATED FOR 25 AMPS AND 50 VOLTS.. THIS PARTICULAR RECTIFIER CAN BE FOUND, BUT THERE ARE CHEAPER ONES WITH 25 AMP RATINGS, BUT VOLTAGE RATINGS OF 400 TO 1000. I DON’T SEE WHY THE HIGHER VOLTAGE RATED RECTIFIER WON’T WORK JUST AS WELL AS THE 50 VOLT ONES, BUT I’M A PURE NOVICE WHEN IT COMES TO ELECTRONICS. I ALSO HAVE THE SAME QUESTION ABOUT THE AMP RATING. IS THERE ANY REASON A 50 AMP RECTIFIER COULDN’T BE USED? IT MAY BE OVERKILL TO PUT IN A RECTIFIER WITH HIGHER VOLTAGE AND AMP RATINGS, THEY ARE MORE READILY AVAILABLE AND CHEAPER AS WELL SO WHO CARES IF IT’S OVERKILL? CAN ANYONE GIVE ME SOME GUIDANCE ON THIS ISSUE?
December 13, 2019 at 6:46 pm #189284Overkill is not a problem. Underkill is. My thinking is at least 4x the actual voltage / amps output for dependability. Just as important is cooling. Mount it on some sort of cool metal part to absorb and dissipate heat.

December 13, 2019 at 8:47 pm #189294I hear that some people use harley davidson rectifier. If I was gonna try one I would look a a Briggs&Stratton regulator/rectifier. They are reasonably priced and have the right amount of wires but I don’t know if they will hold up on a marine engine.
If this link don’t work just search for one on ebay.dale

December 14, 2019 at 9:55 am #189307Try copy and paste this into ebay. This unit has two wires that hook to your stater and one that goes to the battery. Good mounting spot and it also will regulate voltage. Small motors tend to make more voltage the faster they spin!

December 14, 2019 at 1:22 pm #189319THANKS FOR ALL THE REPLIES. I’M INTRIGUED BY THE BRIGGS AND STRATTON REGULATOR, BUT FROM IT’S PHYSICAL APPEARANCE, IT APPEARS TO BE NOTHING MORE THAT A BRIDGE RECTIFIER EVEN THOUGH IT IS CALLED A REGULATOR. DOES ANYONE KNOW FOR SURE WHETHER OR NOT IT IS AN ACTUAL REGULATOR OR SIMPLY A RECTIFIER?
AS FAR AS THE RECTIFIER GOES, WHAT I AM REALLY WONDERING IS WHETHER I CAN USE SAY A 35 OR 50 AMP RECTIFIER WITH VOLTAGE RATINGS OF 400,600 OR EVEN 1000 VOLTS. FOR INSTANCE, I CAN GET A 50 AMP 1000 VOLT RECTIFIER OUT OF CHINA FOR LESS THAN A DOLLAR. IF THAT WILL WORK, AND I THINK IT WILL, I’M ALL IN AND I’LL BUY A DOZEN OF THEM.
BACK TO THE B&S, IF IT IS TRUELY A REGULATOR, I WOULD GO THAT ROUTE. THERE IS CERTAINLY AN ADVANTAGE TO REGULATING THE VOLTAGE EVEN THOUGH IT IS NOT ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY IN MY APPLICATION (MARK 55). I’M GOING TO LOOK INTO THAT FURTHER, BUT IN THE MEANTIME, IF ANYONE KNOWS FOR SURE THAT IT REGULATES AS WELL AS RECTIFIES, THAT WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL.
December 14, 2019 at 1:46 pm #1893201 or 2 $ rectifiers…. Don’t hesitate or mulch this to long
as to the regulator if need be…… drop a note to the manuf. unless anyone can confirm click on CONTACT SELLER
regulators… may have 4 wires AC in B+ out and a ground wire to establish a referrence maybe this one uses the casing as a grnd reference
make certain it can handle the amps you need not just the voltage !!
