RD 14 crank seal question

After carbon seals are in place,there is a cupped metal "washer"installed on each end,then a spring on each end.I assume the cupped side on both goes against the spring and flat side against carbon seal.When I dis-assembled this engine,one on bottom of crank was installed with cup facing and fitting over the carbon seal.
