There’s a huge difference between trying to pull them over on a stand (d….d near impossible) and standing in a boat.I regularly run RDs and even at 75 have no problem pulling them over.Leverage is the key.

I think you are right.  Trying to pull one of these engines over on a stand is near impossible.  The engine is not stable on the stand, and is usually too high to get good “leverage” when pulling the rope.   I’m betting it will be OK once mounted on a boat or in a low rigid/sturdy test tank…

I rarely fool with motors in the 50’s but I did have at one time a ’53, 25. If I remember correctly, it has a round recoil system which was later changed to an elliptical one to offset the difficulty in pulling the motor over on compression. Because of my shoulder, I can’t/shouldn’t crank one of those. They are strong!

Did any of the 25’s have elliptical rope plates or did that come later?

Never on the Big Twin 25s of the 1950s but yes on the 22 cubic inch 25hp of the 1970s era.

Not to be confused with the compression relief on the 35hp motors

This is one of the reasons why I have 50 gallon drums for my stand/barrel.  Clamp a motor on there and pull as hard as you want;  it is not going anywhere.
