I get it now. Thanks Frank and Richard. This is the first big twin I have messed with since I was 18. That was in 1980, so I’m a little fuzzy on the memory of it.
August 26, 2015 at 12:53 am #22673quote FrankR:OK, in the first place, that motor did not have a kill switch or ignition switch as it came from the factory. So somebody has added that second wire coming from the magneto. That’s good, if you want a kill switch because the wire is already there. To add a kill switch, simply extend that dangling black wire to one side of it and run another wire from the other side of the kill switch to the center post on the vacuum cut-out switch (the mystery thing in your picture). Leave the present wire on that center post and don’t mess with any other wires. The vacuum cut-out switch senses when the engine is in run-away condition and cuts out the bottom cylinder till it slows back down. The mercury switch lets the vacuum switch do it’s job only at slow throttle settings. If it were allowed to do it at high throttle settings, it could cause a high speed miss. And yes they WILL go into run-away mode without the vacuum cut-out, and you won’t have any way of stopping it, short of taking a hammer to a spark plug.
My bad Frank, shows what little I know, Thought all of the bigger ones had kill switches….So then this one is shut down but retarding the throttle/mag?

classicomctools@gmail.comAugust 26, 2015 at 1:02 am #22675Mine is shut down by using the electric choke. Pretty sure this is normal for a 57 35hp. Of course you always have the option of setting the idle so low it shuts off but that gets annoying.
August 26, 2015 at 1:33 am #22677I mentioned the hammer because I once had a 40hp Scott McCulloch run wild as I was standing beside it with the hood off. Boy do they ever!! In panic situation, I ducked, then whacked a spark plug with a hammer.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a 57 RD 19? I have 2 black leads coming from under the mag plate. One goes to a switch on the power head ( what’s that for? ) the other is just hanging free and not connected to anything. There is also some type of mercury switch on the throttle gear at the base of the tiller arm ( What’s that for? ) The wires on the mercury switch are in disrepair as well. I’m trying to get this all wired up properly.Thank you,
WannabeHello
