The screws are 1/4-20.The Johnson book I have says to torque to 12-14 foot lbs(144-168 inch lbs). The standard scale I have for that size shows max of 65 inch lbs for low carbon steel screws.I am replacing the screws, are the original something special?

I haven’t looked them up for verification, but the higher torque would be for the top, center & lower bolts near the main bearings. 65 in/lb would be reasonable for the 1/4-20’s around the edges

Frank is correct. On my RD-18, I torqued the main bearing bolts to 156 in-lbs. and the outer 1/4-20 bolts to 70 in-lbs.
