Hey guys, iv’e replaced the starter rope on my 1957 18hp Evinrude Fastwin by basically rewinding the housing until the rope knot became loose and i clamped the pulley housing and i just cut and replaced the rope with no problem, however my 1952 Lightwin has a Simplex Starter system and it looks quite different than the one on the 1957 18hp, my question is can i just basically do the same process as the 1957 18hp? i just don’t know if i have to remove the pulley rope plate to get to the anchor that holds the rope at the end. Any input is appreciated!!

You do not have to take it apart. See that little about 1/8" hole in the pulley? Find something that will fit through it such as a nail or allen wrench. Now, pull the rope all the way out and stick the nail into the hole. That will catch and prevent re-winding. Now simply grab hold of the rope anchor and pull it and the rope out of the pulley.
