O K I think I get it now.
You’re using the clutch plates as spacers?

June 26, 2022 at 7:30 pm #262020Look again at that oil mix. I doubt it says 10W30, as I don’t think multi-weight oils existed when that motor was built and 10W30 would have detergent additives (at least I’ve never heard of a multi-weight il that was non-detergent). This is not an oil for outboards. Back then the recommended oil was SAE 30 non-detergent oil, or Mercury Quicksilver oil, which I think just hit the market about when that motor was born or maybe a couple years later. Today the oil to use is any outboard oil that has an industry TCW-3 rating. I buy Walmart’s house brand in gallon jugs for about $15/gallon. The 8 to 1 mix you mentioned is a safe mix, but unless you are using it on a hydroplane where it’s revving RPMs above max spec, with today’s TCW-3 oil, My opinion is that 16 to 1 should work well. I use 16 to 1 on my older KE-7 , but use 8 to 1 when on my hydroplane. Gas/oil mix ratios are a hot subject so I hope this doesn’t start a mix ratio war on this post. Ignore those who say Amsoil can be used at 100 to 1!
June 27, 2022 at 10:43 pm #262079I saw mercury tech bulletin that recommended doubling up on the oil for high speed as in racing. Good point OBNut. Jim

I let most of the excessive oil ratio recommendations
(IMO) go by. I was about to do the same here but the
“mix ratio war” has gotten me inspired.
Alternate suggestions often are not received well here.
Just go back to where I posted an alternate
suggestion to remove the cartridge. It was immediately
dismissed as flawed to where I had to defend my
position.
I chose to ask questions about his procedure to better
understand it. I learned something.
The response to my experience of running a 3oz. per
gallon mix often feels combative.
I’m not looking for I fight. Nothing I offer should be
taken as an attack.
I rarely offer an opinion without some experience
to confirm it. The videos listed below of some of
my motors that have run on a 3oz. per gallon mix
extensively. I won’t post any links. Anyone that has
an interest can search them out. As with anything
I post, I’m only offering information. I’m not expecting
to change everybody’s mind but there is another side
to the story. Something to consider or dismiss as
one would see fit. I was a more oil the better guy
myself for the first 35+ years of my life.
