Wondering if you guys know whether or not a 1954 recoil will fit on a 1955 model? I know the recoil went to the elliptical design at some point in the mid 50s. Anyone know for sure?

      part numbers from the catalogs:
      1954 376099
      1955 376384
      1956 277556
      1957 277556

      thanks!

’56 was the year the Johnsons changed their starter design and started sharing parts with Evinrude. ’54 and ’55 Johnson starters are the same but I’m just not sure about the Rudes.

          376099 is superseded by 376384.

Evinrude started using the Johnson designed auto rewind starter with the 1948 3.3 horse power alternate firing Sportwin. It was on the 25 horse Bigtwin, the 14 horse Sportwin and the 7.5 horse Fleetwin of 1950. This changed in 1956 when the Evinrude designed elliptical starter was introduced. . . 😉
