Recommended outboard for a Richline S-12

I acquired an early 60’s Richline S-12, It’s a 12′ Alum. runabout with steering and controls. I’m not sure how big of an outboard I can put on it. It’s blue and white so I’d like to restore it with those colors and put an evinrude of the same time era that has the same colors on it. just to get it to match. If anyone can help I’d greatly appreciate it. Thanks!!

Would you post a picture of your boat? That will also help us to recommend a particular size of outboard.

If it is a similar boat to the Alumacraft Model R then you can have quite a variety of engines on it.
This is my 12′ Model R. It currently has this engine on it. 1954 Johnson 25hp. It also runs well with an 18hp on it.
Either of these engines provides enough power to cruise two people and moderate gear at a comfortable speed without having to run at WOT all the time.

In searching out information on the Richline it seems you have similar posts all over the web. Iboats and Tinboats, from as far back as 2013 and no replies from you….whats up with that?

Once the snow melts and I can get it uncovered I will take a pic. It is very similar to the one in the picture. Honestly I get scared and distracted when it comes to this boat. I’ve never really been around boats much and it’s more fun for me to actually get info on it and "bench race" that it is to actually restore it and fit a motor to it. However I’ve bought a couple of books and one mentioned this website and I was really excited because the author teaches or did teach at a college about an hour away and also spoke of the antique boat museum in Clayton which again is about an hour from me. I also acquired a few outboards ( 1980’s Chrysler 9.9, 1960’s eljin 7.5, 2 -1957 Johnson 15 hp, and a 1953 Johnson 25 hp, and a 1953 Johnson 3 hp) So now that I have some motors and a couple of boats. The other one being a monark modified V jon boat I use for duck hunting. I want to restore the S-12 with a proper motor and put a 25 HP on the monark. The serial number on the rich line is 60065 and I did find some info on richline from 1960 that shows a speedster model that is 12′ but it doesn’t show an s-12 but I have to assume that’s is what it is. I’d like to get a 1959 0r 1960 Rude 18 or 25 for it. I did find one but it apprears to be a longshaft and the s-12 has 15" transom. So there you have it. my life story on my current obsessions. I’m thankful for forums like this to help me because since I’ve started to dig into one of my 15 johnsons I feel much more confident. I’m open to any help and suggestions. Thanks!!

With decks and steering I would guess that it is the Speedster model. According to this link it is rated for 25hp.

Thanks Kirk! I remember my father in law telling me that it was his uncles boat and it was the fastest one on the lake.

Good deal….now it is time to take the next step.
The 15hp you have is probably a 1956 as in 1957 the engine was turned into an 18hp.
The 15 would be a good place to start on that hull. I would expect to see 25mph + or – with that engine. The 1953 25hp is a great engine performance wise and will be a good one to step up when you get used to the 15.

omg those are amazing!! I have a long ways to go to get my boat to look like that! my 15’s are short shafts however my 25 is a long shaft. i found a 1959 evinrude on craigslist but that one looks like a long shaft as well. I think i will take your advice and concentrate on the 15’s for now. I might look into trading my 25 for a short shaft. i just don’t want to trade it not knowing how mechanically sound it is. It was a barn find and sat for quite some time. The one 15 i have without elect start was my brother in laws and he went through it a couple of years ago, I ran it on my Duck boat earlier this fall and it has a weird noise so i pulled the lower unit off and it appeared their was a pebble or a piece of plastic in the housing causing the noise. The one i have with elect start i bought off from craigslist and i’m going to replace the impeller and go through the ignition system and give it a good once over. The 15 seemed to move my 1554 ok but i was hoping to put the 25 on it.
