I’m planning to repaint the hood on my 1955 Johnson 5.5 hp. The hood has the original paint and decals which are quite faded. I have no special tools in terms of paint sprayer or booth.
Can someone refer me to a step-by-step guide on surface preparation, priming, finish painting, and decals for a person without a lot of paint expertise?

Other than that you can “scuff” the entire surface on the outside with like 180 grit sandpaper, don’t miss the nooks and cranny’s, so that the new paint can adhere to the old paint.
Another option is to use paint stripper, Citris Strip works and is eco friendly, but is slower than the likes of Aviation paint stripper.
The quality of the prep determines how good your paint “can be”.
Then the quality of the paint job is a whole nother gamble.
Hope this helps..

classicomctools@gmail.comAugust 13, 2025 at 2:19 pm #298923I’m no painting expert and I don’t have a paint booth or spray rig either but here’s a few pics from when I painted my ’54 Johnson 5.5hp hood. As Richard noted, you can either completely blast or strip the old paint off or just sand it smooth. If you’re going to the trouble of painting the hood, I think you get a better job if you completely strip it down to bare metal – I use the Citri Strip paint stripper. There’s a lot of narrative to go along with the pics that I won’t bother to type out here but you can call me at 713-927-3352 and I’ll be happy to walk you through it. Also as Richard noted, the quality of the finish paint job is all in the prep work.

A "Boathouse Repair" is one thats done without having tools or the skills to do it properly.

August 14, 2025 at 3:49 pm #298975Thanks Tubs and Fleetwin. I’ve restored about a dozen motors in the last few years and no doubt this ’54 Johnson ended up with best looking paint job of all of them. Very time consuming but worth it in the end.
