Remote steering/throttle

Just picked this up a small wood speedboat auction. Apparently the second of 2 made. Plywood/fiberglass. Owner told me he had an 18 hp motor on it and it went over 40 mph. I have a 1950’s johnson 10 hp that I may put on it. Can anybody walk me thru parts & procedure for converting this motor to remote steering and throttle? There was a post that said it was not difficult but I could not find any details or parts list

Those in the know say the rectangular 1960’s style remote boxes were better, but my boat came with an old box (and holes drilled for it), so I’ve never tried the newer type (tho I grew up with a 1960’s "selectric" box that had detents (clicks) on the throttle, so I’m sure the newer ones would "feel like home")

If your 1950’s 10 HP Johnson has the shift on the side, and throttle on the tiller, then remotes are easy. If it’s early enough (I think 1954 or earlier) to have the shift in front and no throttle on the tiller, then going remote is fabricating and inventing custom parts. Once you are rigged for 1955 and up remotes, you can easily drop just about any Johnson/Evinrude motor on it up through the 1970s.

Should you be considering a deadman’s racing throttle? If not, you probably should at least have a lanyard kill switch.

Good advice, Frank. I have Ron DeVries coming over this week to give me some pointers. Hopefully he will have some parts I can use, maybe a kill switch too
