Trying to remove the lower unit, the part that houses the gears in my 1960 Scott 40hp outboard model A3HB. i have a parts diagram and the repair manual- the diagram shows the third nut in front of the bevel gear, yet on my unit, there is no such nut…it’s just not there. The repair manual is clear that there’s 3 nuts holding the lower unit bolts, but I looked everywhere and I found only 2… The location of the third according to the parts diagram is just not there. I removed the two I could see and then tried to separate it… But seems to be stuck at the front and only separates about 1/16″ in the rear. Should I just got it harder to separate or is there a bolt under the shift lever? I can’t remove it to see. Needless to say, I am frustrated…. I cannot remove the shift mechanism easily and i have the other two nuts (part #1) removed so in theory it should be easy to seperate…but it seems to be bound up at the front. Could it just be stuck? Any other thoughts or ideas? If I hit it harder will I break anything?
July 9, 2021 at 3:12 pm #242337Don’t hit anything. Can you post some pictures? Your description doesn’t match what my 1960 service manual shows (2 long studs & nuts). However, earlier models do show three fasteners, two screws an a nut. Look for the nut in the area below the lower motor mount, rubber or springs, whichever the case may be.

I am attaching photos… the unit i have seems to have just the 2 long bolts holding the lower unit together… i have been able to seperate it about 1/8″ at the rear but it seems stuck by the front (i have removed the nuts that are shown in the photos) The service manual i have states 3 bolts…so that was my concern since i only seem to have 2…in the 1960 parts catalog there is shown the two threaded rods but they also show a threaded hole on the front side of the driveshaft which doesnt match
i wonder if there is just corrosion that is keeping the front threaded rod from moving
July 10, 2021 at 11:57 am #242367OK, with that, I assume you are correct, it is corrosion that is holding the front stud. The picture I posted was a previous model which did have 3 fasteners, but it doesn’t apply to your 1960 model.
BTW, for whatever it is worth, OMC had a similar setup in their 1960s vintage motors. Seized studs were the norm for them after use in salt water. I’ve had to resort to hacksawing them apart. Let’s hope you don’t have to do that with your Scott.
July 10, 2021 at 7:38 pm #242406yeah here’s hoping… i soaked it in penetrating oil, and am trying to slowly wedge it apart but sure seems stuck
a 5 minute job that is taking days… -
