I have a 1965 6 hp Viking (Chrysler) and I need to remove the power head to fix something that’s gibbled/broken on the upper part of the shifting mechanism. I don’t think I can access it any other way – or am I wrong on that? Assuming I do need to take off the power head, what’s the best way to go about it? I’ve got it unbolted and loose but I’m not sure how or in what order to disconnect the throttle, fuel line, recoil etc. so I can get it completely off and get at the shifting rod. The lower unit and the drive shaft are already out.
(No I don’t have a repair manual for this engine… if anyone knows of where to get a decent one please let me know. I did see the exploded parts diagram in another thread for a ’73 Chrysler 6hp and that was pretty useful but I think some of the components changed a bit between ’65 and ’73.)
May 6, 2017 at 1:25 am #57181Did you get the lower unit off without disconnecting the shift rod ? The bare-bones instructions I can find says the coupler is behind the swivel bracket and there’s no implication the powerhead has to come off for access. If you PM me your email I can send you the info I can find.
May 6, 2017 at 3:59 am #57187I did disconnect the shift rod, at the connecting screws in the shaft. The lower unit is all fine, but the upper part of the shift rod doesn’t move at all when I move the gear lever.
I can’t see how the coupling would be accessible behind the swivel bracket… it’s all inside the leg and the bits that I think are messed up are directly beneath the power head.
I would be very grateful for any info you can send me – I’ll PM you! Thanks 😀
May 6, 2017 at 11:27 am #57190There is a roll pin that connects the shift handle to the shift rod that brakes on these motors have you checked that? you might not have to remove the power head.
May 6, 2017 at 1:53 pm #57196Replacing a roll pin sounds a lot more fun than removing the power head. Where exactly is the roll pin? This motor was grungy when I got it and I should give it a good clean but I haven’t so I could have easily overlooked a roll pin… Any chance you could post a photo with the pin circled? 🙂
May 6, 2017 at 5:38 pm #57202Perhaps this will help, number 2 is the roll pin . . . 😕

May 7, 2017 at 1:15 am #57231Thanks for posting that, Garry! Can you post the corresponding part names/numbers? I’m curious as to what the screw labeled #49 does.
May 7, 2017 at 12:55 pm #57242I believe #49 is a grease fitting
May 8, 2017 at 12:39 am #57267Yes part #2 in Garry’s post.
May 8, 2017 at 3:07 am #57274Yes it is. The same basic lower unit is used on the 5 through 9.2 horse outboards, with a few variations in some part numbers. The one I have digitized is the 8 horse version. A few part numbers may be different. . .
