I just received a pair of these to put on an Elgin/West Bend. The coils aren’t retained by the traditional bent over tabs, but rather seem to have a plastic core with several ribs bearing on the laminations. (I think this was mentioned by someone here.)

Am wondering about safe ways of removing these. Is it safe to just support the outer housing of the coil and push the lams out? Or, does this risk ruining the coil? It might be possible to get a fine scroll saw blade in and cut away some of the plastic ribs, but it would be fussy. Thanks for any voices of experience on this.

The newer Sierra coils don’t have the metal tab, but the plastic ribs that you mentioned. I usually support the coil over the open jaws of a bench vise, and drive the coil off with a 1/4 inch socket extension. Be carefull you don’t damage the small primary wires of the new coil. It’s easy to do if you aren’t paying attention. I’ve did several this way and never had any coil damage. I’ve used a little Crazy Glue [super glue] on some of the Elgin [Wico] laminates to secure the coil to the laminates.
