I believe I have seen a post where two standard OMC coils are used to replace the original Elto coil but have been unable to find it ……….if I remember correctly, the coils were mounted on the original laminations and it all fitted nicely into the original tube.

Any help would be much appreciated

Zephyr or Light Four coils have been recommended replacements  in the past but maybe this will help.

Thanks Mumbles for your prompt reply.

I’m trying to help a friend with a replacement coil as the original is missing and unfortunately the flywheel too.

The replacement coil shown in the video would be ideal and I have used a Zephyr one  successfully myself. Unfortunately, although the coil shown is great value on Big Riches site at $15.00 US, the postage is “hair raising” at over $46.00 US to NZ…….the total cost works out at about $61.00 US., which would  be over $100.00 NZ.

Because of this high cost, I thought using two OMC coils, (which are readily available here and aren’t too expensive) would keep the costs down……….I intend loaning him my flywheel so that he can  have one cast and then he can do the machining.

          Thanks again for your help.

Using two OMC coils should work fine. Won’t
be a lot different than what’s in side there now.
Once you get past all the goop there should be
some wires going through the coils. Should be
more than enough and you won’t have to do
any filing. Thay can be as long or short as you
            think they need to be.
I would suggest you cut off the plug wire
sockets so you can solder the plug wires on.
The coils “must” be facing the same direction
            as in my example.

Thanks very much Tubs, ……….excellent!……../that’s the setup I have been thinking of.

Unfortunately the original coil has been lost, so I don’t have the iron wire core to use……..any suggestions what to use instead?

              Thanks again.

Don’t have a suggestion as far as what to use for a wire core.
Lacking an old coil were I could get some laminates, I’d making some.
I have a friend with a shear. I’d cut some strips from a steel plate and
                file them to fit.
If you cant find another Zephyr coil here is a group of motor that can
donate a coil if you should come across one. This includes the single
cylinder models. They also have a 2 cyl. coil. grounding out one side
                to the mag. plate.

Tubs, isn’t there a guy on eBay selling coils that can be used to replace the original coils in Elto battery ignition systems?

Read Monte’s reply to Mumbles- “Hair raising” shipping is his issue.

Thanks, tubs. I see that now. Maybe I shouldn’t study for my precalc test and read the forums at the same time. lol

                        Hi Tubs and Finn Freeman

Thanks for your replies and sorry for the delay in replying………just had a dose of darned Covid to deal with in our family!!!

Tubs, I have access to a shear for sheet metal and  I was wondering about getting some thin steel sheet and cutting 7/16 inch strips, but they speak of “iron ” laminates in the core and I don’t know if steel would work. I have spoken to guys here and they are puzzled too.  Interesting to note that my Mum used iron wire for doing floristry when I was a kid, but all that wire seems to have vanished long ago, so that idea “goes out the window”!

Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

                        Thanks again

PS. I did have two of the motors as shown in your photos, but I gave them away to our Maritime Museum about 40 years back!!!
