I would very much appreciate any suggestions to replace the current coil tube on the above.

The coil has been taken apart many years back and someone has replaced the wiring and the original tube. The replacement tube has been made with  cardboard and is larger in diameter by about 1/4 of  an inch. When the replacement coil tube was reinstalled, someone got rough with it and being bigger diameter, it distorted the front part of the tank where the model plate is fastened……….may I add ,that the coil chucks a good 1/4 inch spark!.

Attached are some photos of the problem:-

Thanks in advance for any help

I believe some make the tubes out of PVC plumbing pipe,
Also, I think Richard was selling new coils……..

I have cleaned up the original coil and reused
them but I don’t feel its worth the effort and
they don’t always survive the cleaning.
I would suggest you start over using a Zephyr
coil or the coil in the link below. I have used PVC
as a replacement tube. Its about 1/4 of an inch
smaller than the original and doesn’t hold paint
well. I have wrapped them with contact paper.
I believe Richard actually offers a replacement
tube so you can build a new coil. Doug Penn
was offering new coils at one time.

Thanks very much Crosbyman, Bucaneer and The Boat House for vour replies

You have certainly given me some ideas to consider.

Today I was searching through some old  boxes of parts, when I discovered these coils……….it must be all of 50yrs since I got them!

I had got them from the master Evinrude agent here in Auckland, just prior to them  throwing out a lot of old stock.

I have a hunch the larger one is for an Evinrude Zephyr, but the smaller one I don’t know………there’s no part number or manufacturers names on either.

The overall length of the big one, is four and a half  inches and the smaller one is three and a quarter inches.

My meter showed 8.28 Ohms on the larger and 5.95 Ohms on the small one……..which I presume is ok?

They both have two terminals on each, indicating they are for opposed twin motors, which makes me wonder if they would be suitable replacements for the current coil.?

Attached are photos of the two coils.

Everyone has their opinion, but I would suggest you only consider using the Zephyr coil shown in the photo. That other coil is hard to find as a replacement for a restoration and I think it’s for a small Evinrude? Zephyr coils are a dime a dozen, so if you mess it up, finding another one is easy.

Looking at the ends of the coil laminates your
larger coil appears to be the type of coil used in
                  the Zephyr’s.

Thanks George and Tubs for your reply………you guys quite made my day!……..looks like the large Zephyr coil is the way to go.

The next thing is to find a suitable tube……….unfortunately everything down here is metric now, so I might have to do a bit of hunting.

Another question I have, relating to the original coil this time, is that although it works ok, I thought I would try testing it with my meter as I did on the Zephyr coil etc, but I couldn’t get any readings at all. …….I even tried my other ruddertwin, but no readings either…….where am I going wrong?

I have looked on the web without any luck, so if you could please tell  me the correct procedure it would be much appreciated.

Attached is a photo where I have numbered the wires.
