I have a single cylinder Neptune outboard that I am thinking about replacing the points and condenser with a Nova II igniter . I have read that the similar Atoms unit works well on these smaller motors, but they seem to be fairly rare. If anyone has any input [ good or bad ] about these things, I would appreciate it before I purchase one.

I don’t know about the Neptunes magneto but a few years ago I burned up a bunch of Nova II’s trying them out on a four horse Evinrude test motors magneto. I couldn’t get more than 45 minutes out of any of them before they blew. Some of them lasted a matter of seconds. After lots of talk here, it was decided they couldn’t handle the strong pulses from the OMC mag. I think it had something to do with the quality of the internal transistor. They are advertised as for outboards to but they sure don’t work on OMC’s but it might work on your motor. The red atoms are the answer but like you say, they are getting a bit hard to find. That’s why I buy them whenever I see them.

I wonder now was there ever any damage done by using the nova II to the coil? I have a Nova II here that I could try but do not want to risk damaging the coil with it . The coil checks out good, and I tried a rouge condenser that was in the junk drawer . The motor came up, and I ran it for about 2 minutes before shutting it down. It did sputter a bit but may have been caused by other issues. I have been in search of a condenser for it with little luck [although I am still waiting on Mr Penns reply. ] Thank you for the reply
