      Afternoon guys.
On the QD-15 I’m working on I have to replace the shift rod o-ring, and I’m hearing that sometimes the bushing gets damaged when driving it out. Anyone have any thoughts on that? Any source of tools that will drive the bushing out? I know Frank Robb used to do them, but has stopped doing so because the tolerances were too close.

What is required when replacing the bushing, I think I remember reading it requires machining once in the case?

      Thanks

Well, I guess the bushing could be damaged while driving it out of the gearcase. You could pass the shift rod through the bushing once it is out of the gearcase to check for damage. It will bind if damaged.
Driving it out is the tricky part, when you really need the shift rod tool. Driving it back in could be done with a socket or something like that, although it is difficult to get everything oriented correctly down inside the gearcase without the tool.

I made a tool to push them out with but it is very close on the go no go size. Putting a new one in is easer. Use a long 1/4 inch bolt, 6 or 7". put a nut all the way up until the threads end so you can slid the new bushing up onto it. Use a washer between the nut and the bushing. This helps you keep the bushing going straight as it is going in. Tap the bolt head lightly and go easy. Clean and lube before starting it in.
The diameter of the casting hole at the bottom ( where the O ring goes ) is just a 1/32" bigger than the 1/4" bore of the bushing. That’s what makes the tool for driving it out so hard make right with out damage to the casting. Good luck.

Gotcha. I was wondering what was preventing me from driving it out from the inside.
I have a serious belief that this bushing will be a bear to get out. I had to weld a nut to two of the flathead bolts to get them out, I have no reason to think this will be any different.

I change the O ring on every one I do anymore and they mostly drive out fairly easy. You can warm things up a bit if needed, it helps too.

Instructions for getting it out without the tool are on my website. http://www.franksoutboardtools.com Your choice to replace it or reuse it if you don’t tap too far.

Hugh, I’ve had good luck with heat on these year motors, but if my luck on this engine and removal of parts doesn’t change I might start to regret buying it. Even heat isn’t doing a lot here.

Thanks Frank, it’s a good option if nothing else works. If I end up taking it out that way I’ll definitely replace the bushing.
I wonder if you might be able to get away with using a rivet to drive it out?

Thanks Randy. I’ll take you up on that in the next couple weeks. I was going to do some bead blasting with Ted possibly mid-week next week, maybe I can stop on the way there or back, or maybe you can come over there?

BTW – remember that Chris Craft Commander I went and looked at? The guys selling it got it from a warehouse they bought not long ago that seemed to be owned by a hoarder. Before I visited them they had two dozen motors or so that they just grabbed cause they were easily seen and grabbable. I asked if he’d let me know when they go back, I think he said he was going back maybe sometime in the first couple weeks of April to clear it out so they could clear the land it’s on. When I hear from him, want me to let you know so you can go with?

Just give me a little advance notice when you going to go see Ted and Sure I would love to go look but I don’t need any more motors but I would love to see what they have you never know 😉
