I have a K model about 1942/1943 that is in relatively good shape. I need to find a person in the Tennessee area who does quality restoration. I am not sure to what level I want the restoration. Just get it running or make it run and look like new.

      Thank You

The first Mercurys were built in 1940.
The K1 was called "Special" and was a 2.5 horse power single.
The K2 Mercury Standard was an integrated 3 horse single with modern design.
The K3 was the same 3 horse single single with a auto rewind starter.
The K4 was a 6 horse twin, really two singles, stacked.
The K4 was the 6 horse twin with an auto rewind starter.
In 1941 the models started with KB, starting with the KB1 Comet – 2.9 HP
KB1A Comet Deluxe 3.2 HP and KB2 Streamliner.
Then we find the two models built in 1941 & 1942.
The KB3 Mercury Torpedo a 3.2 horse single and the 5.8 horse Mercury Rocket, a twin.
World War 2 interrupted outboard production from January 1942 until late 1945.
I have to say some of our members are Mercury fanatics – but not me.

The prewar and early postwar Kiekhaefer Mercury, Wizard and Sea King single(prewar only) are fairly easy to work on mechanically provided they were properly stored and not messed
with by inexpert hands. A gentle cleaning to remove decades of grease and grime may be
all that is needed for a fairly decent original motor. On the other hand missing, broken or
worn out parts call for more serious effort. Many of the fasteners on Kiekhaefer’s outboards
must be replaced at the location they were installed by factory. If someone has worked on
motor in past they may have failed to notice this and/or lost the correct fastener. Often
spark plug covers, carburetor covers and rewind assemblies were removed and not replaced.

Step 1 Identify your make and model Look for id plate or stamped into rope plate or elsewhere. East Coast Marine Old Mercs has posted photos and brief information on
the early Mercury and Wizards along with some items that may be needed. As for
who might do work ask Dan in Tenn.if he could recommend someone in area.
