Excellent work, and glad you are willing to share some details. Please let us know what material is being used (galvanized steel?) and how one would go about safely soldering it.
Thanks,
Tom Manley
March 14, 2017 at 9:45 pm #54335The steel that I used was the same thickness as the original and its not galvanized as it is not a good idea to use galvanize in situations where there is welding or soldering as the galvanized coating will give off toxic fumes when heated. As for the soldering I use a gas torch with a special tip that I use for doing body lead on vintage cars. It creates a large rose bud flame. For attaching the tags I use a large flat iron, I have a video of reassembling another tank. I will try to load the video.
Thanks

March 15, 2017 at 2:44 am #54354A true master at work and showing us his methods to! I couldn’t agree anymore that patience is the key here as it is with any project done correctly. Well done!
Now I can’t wait to see the finished product!

Robbie RobertsonMarch 15, 2017 at 5:18 am #54360A truly brilliant job James……. what a challenge!
You have certainly planned the job very thoroughly.
Going on the hammers in the photos,I suspect that you are an
old school panel beater, going on what I have seen so far,
or had a lot of experience working with sheet metal.
I just love to see this sort of work…….you are a real inspiration!I too would love to know how you formed that locking flange.
Top marks to you sir…….keep up the great work!Monte NZ
March 15, 2017 at 6:16 pm #54382Nicely done. Did you ever see the TV street rod cable program with "Jesse James"That is where the old and not so old learned how to use metal fabrication tools. Still have a"few"in the old car hobby/industry who also use lead not putty/FBG. Truly a labor of love. Most could not afford an hourly rate fabrication. Teach the skill before it is lost in your neighborhood.
